Showdown at Sundown Rules

Sioux Narrows Arts Council Showdown at Sundown

Artists’ Showdown at Sundown is an interactive painting event and FUNdraiser for the Sioux Narrows Arts Festival 60th Anniversary Celebration in 2021.

Artists will create the best work they can during two preliminary rounds and one final round. As they work, the audience will move around the easels, allowing a closeup view of the creative process. The only medium used is acrylic paint and the tools allowed are brushes, palette knives and other non-mechanical implements. At the end of each round, the audience members will vote for their favorite painting and the top artists move on to Final Round #3. Audience members can place bids in a silent auction to take the paintings home. 50% of the auction fees will go to the artists with the remaining 50% going to the Sioux Narrows Arts Council.

COMPETITION RULES

Artists are provided with materials to create a 16x20 inch work of art in acrylic paint, pencil, pen, 1 palette, 2 mixing plates, paper towels, paints and one water container per round.

Acrylic paints will be provided. Artists may use any of the colours offered for their palette.

Palettes must be set prior to the beginning of each round. Artists will be notified when it is time to prepare. No additional paint is allowed once the round begins.

Artists may not mix paint until the round begins.

There is no theme; artists are not limited in subject matter.

Reference material is not permitted at the easel.

During competition artists may use any non-mechanical tools: Brushes, palette knives, rollers, sponges, tape etc. Tape must be removed before the end of the round. Artists are asked to supply their own tools. Pre-made images, stencils or mechanical tools (spray bottle, hair dryer, etc.) are not permitted.

HOW IT WORKS

There will be two preliminary rounds with up to six artists in each.

The artists will have 25 minutes to create their painting.

Timing will be announced every few minutes by the Master of Ceremonies to alert the audience and artists of remaining painting time.

Each audience member will receive three voting ballots (one per round), which will allow them to vote for one painting at the conclusion of each round. The top artists by audience vote in Round#1 and Round #2 will advance to compete again in the final round (Round #3).

In Round #3, artists make a new palette and are provided with a new canvas and supplies. The audience vote will decide the winner of the trophy for 2020 Showdown at Sundown.
